Exciting Plans Ahead
It
is no secret that Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family were some of
De Smet's most famous residents. You may not know that an
extraordinary treasure, the one room school house Laura Ingalls Wilder
and her sister attended, is sitting on Third Street blending in with
other homes in the neighborhood.
This building was used as De Smet's First School house from 1880 to
1884 when it was moved and then used as a private residence until the
Society purchased it. Some of Wilder's most memorable stories
took place in this building. It was used as a school and a
meeting place and played an important part in the town's history.
The
Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society is currently raising funds and
making plans in order to bring this school back to life and open it to
the public. Click one of the links below for more information.
