Society Awarded $10,000 Grant
March 2008 - The Laura
Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society recently received
a $10,000 grant from the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation to use for
improvements to
the Sigurd Anderson School/Discovery Hands-On Center.
The
DAR Foundation awarded grants in the amount of $26,780
to five different organizations for the purpose of restoring or
repairing
historic sites in South Dakota.
The
foundation was created by the Mary Chilton Chapter in Sioux Falls
of the
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Its purpose is to support
historic
preservation, education and patriotism in the Sioux
Falls
community and the state of South Dakota. Grants
are awarded three times a year.
Cheryl
Palmlund, director of the society, said the money
will be used to re-shingle the roof of the school house and help make
the
building handicapped accessible.
Construction
has already begun on the building, which should
be open for tours within the next few weeks.
