Free tour maps are available at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes.
For some old fashioned fun visit our Discovery Center. Try your hand at an old treadle sewing machine, dress up like a pioneer and learn to read Braille!
Your adventure continues to the Ingalls
Home on Third Street, the final home of Pa, Ma, and Mary Ingalls. Charles Ingalls built this home in 1887 and still stands today. It is filled with original items of the Ingalls Family!
A special highlight of your tour will be the summer exhibit of original items of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family. The Society houses the largest collection of original artifacts of the Ingalls family. See Pa’s handwritten description of the settlement of De Smet and Laura’s fine china!
Your next stop will be a replica of the Brewster School, the first school Laura taught in. This would be the first time Laura had ever been away from Ma and Pa! How did she ever survive?
Next you will follow your guide to the newest addition to the Society, the First School of De Smet. Do the infamous Nellie Oleson and Eliza Jane Wilder sound familiar? Yes, this is the original school building that Laura and her sister, Carrie, attended.
The first home on your tour will be the Surveyors’ House, from Laura’s book By the Shores of Silver Lake. This is the first home the family lived in when they came to Dakota Territory. Laura thought a great many surveyors must live here to need such a large house!
Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes Guided Tours begin at the Gift Shop located in the heart of Laura's Little Town on the Prairie.
